Preparing your Home Inventory List

This is the perfect time of year to make sure that both your house documents and insurance coverages are up-to-date.

A great way to begin is with a home inventory. Have you made updates to your home or replaced appliances or furnishings? Purchased artwork or jewelry? Inherited antiques or family heirlooms? It is much harder to recreate this list when you have suffered a loss due to fire or theft. Putting a little time in now can save you headaches later on.

  • Take several photos of each room. Be sure to include close-ups of furniture, artwork, collectibles, electronics. Include serial numbers if applicable.
  • Don't forget the garage, basement and shed! These may include some of your most expensive items such as a riding lawnmower, tools, custom sports equipment.
  • Review each room individually, listing all items of value, including their age and estimated replacement cost.
  • Make a copy of the list and photos and save it on your computer, a CD, or USB flash drive. If you don't have a safety deposit box or a fireproof safe, consider giving a copy to a close relative. And put a copy in the folders for each room that you made per instructions from Noble's last newsletter
  • Finally, contact your insurance company if you feel that adjustments should be made to your coverage.
